Three HGVs involved in serious collision on M5

M5 southbound junction 19 to junction 20 Gordano to Clevedon

Firefighters from Avonmouth, Pill, Portishead and Temple fire stations were called to a road traffic collision involving three heavy goods vehicles.

The drivers of two of the vehicles were rescued before the arrival of the fire service. The driver of the third vehicle was rescued by crews using cutting and rescue equipment.

There was a large spillage on the carriageway as a result of the collision and the M5 remains closed southbound between J19 and J20.

Avon & Somerset Constabulary (A&SC) is advising motorists to try and avoid the area and find alternative routes for travelling home from work during the rush hour, as the obstruction may not be completely cleared.

One of the lorries involved was carrying chemicals which need to be removed from the vehicle before the obstruction can be cleared.  That process is underway but it is difficult to say when it will be finished.

A&SC is working to partially reopen the motorway as quickly as possible to minimise the disruption, however, delays are likely.
