Firefighters have extinguished a large fire at the South Bristol Sports Centre in Hengrove.

At the height of the incident around 50 firefighters, nine fire engines, two aerial appliances and command units were at the scene working hard to bring the fire under control.

More than 25 emergency calls were received from members of the public reporting the fire which involved the first floor and the roof of the building. The fire, which threatend the entire building, sent a large plume of smoke into the air and was visible for several miles. Firefighters used hose reels and jets to tackle the fire; the turntable ladders were used to provide water from above.

Thanks to the efforts of firefighters, the blaze was contained to around a quarter of the building, although extensive damage was caused in this area.

There were no reports of any injuries and it is thought that everyone who had been in the building at the time of the fire has been accounted for.
