business safety week logoFire Safety Officers from Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AF&RS) will be offering businesses safety information to be shared with their staff during the Chief Fire Officers Association’s (CFOA’s) UK Business Safety Week from Monday 5 to Sunday 11 September.

Business owner’s responsibilities

If you are a business owner or you responsible for a business premises the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order means legally you must reduce the risk of fire and ensure people can safely escape if there is a fire.

Non-compliance can lead to enforcement which could pose a financial, legal and reputational risk to your business.

You must:

  • Carry out a fire risk assessment and review it regularly;
  • Create an emergency plan and ensure you know what to do if a fire does occur in your premises or at a nearby premises;
  • Maintain and regularly test any fire protection equipment and
  • Induct and train all employees when they start work and ensure there are periodic refreshers

Being compliant with the law means you are protecting your business, premises and employees and you are prepared if there is a fire.

 

False alarms

False alarms disrupt employees and customers and are also expensive for businesses and fire and rescue services.

We were called out to 5510 false alarms in 2015.

  • Repeated false alarms from your business are a sign that you should review your procedures.
  • False alarms can be caused by unmaintained detection equipment or because the wrong detector is positioned in the wrong place.

Christmas is approaching

shopping mall at ChristmasBusinesses will be recruiting additional members of seasonal staff in the run up to the Christmas period.

The new recruits may not have the same level of fire safety awareness as permanent members of staff.

This time of year is a good opportunity to remind all employers of the need to review fire risk assessments and training to ensure existing staff know the importance of fire safety.

As stock levels start to increase in the build up to the festive period make sure stairs and exits are clear.
