Crooks Lane, Kewstoke, Weston-super-Mare
A static caravan was left badly damaged by fire.
When crews arrived at the scene they found the caravan, measuring approximately 10 metres by 20 metres, well alight.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using a high pressure hose reel and a 45mm covering jet.
It appears two members of the public were in the area at the time and on noticing the fire they helped a man in his 80s, who was inside the caravan, to safety.
The occupant and a man in his 40s were treated at the scene for the effects of breathing in smoke and the man in his 80s was taken to hospital.
It’s thought the fire started accidentally after cooking was left unattended in the kitchen. The caravan was badly damaged.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) would like to remind people to take care when cooking, always turn off appliances after use and never leave cooking unattended.
Whilst AF&RS would like to commend the actions of the two members of the public in this incident, we would never advise people to put their own safety at risk. If you discover a fire get out, stay out and dial 999.
