Roads and railway station open after supermarket fire

Lidl, Summer Lane, Worle, Weston-super-Mare

AF&RS and all the agencies involved in the fire at Lidl supermarket, Worle, have been working hard to restore normality to the area.

As a result of this work and following a 12.00hrs multi-agency meeting, New Bristol Road, Worle Railway Station and Worle High Street were fully opened.

Later in the afternoon all cordons around the site were lifted and people whose properties had been evacuated were allowed home.

Fire and rescue service presence on site has been reduced, but one appliance remains on scene to dampen down any hot spots.

Earlier today Positive Pressure Ventilation Fans were used to disperse smoke logging and as a result, six firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus were able to go into the periphery of the building to gain a more in-depth assessment of the fire and resulting damage.

AF&RS has worked with structural engineers regarding the stability of the structure; until the building is deemed 100 per cent safe, crews and Fire Investigation Officers will not enter the building.

Residents of Thorn Close in the properties nearest to the supermarket have now been allowed back into their homes.

Anyone with any information on the fire is asked to contact Weston CID on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org
