Our Operational Response team have a vacancy for the role of a Hydrant Technician based at the Technical Centre, Nova Way. Hydrant Technicians are responsible for ensuring that the 32,000 hydrants at Avon Fire and Rescue (AF&RS) are maintained.
Hydrant Technicians are required to participate in the management of the Water Function by auditing existing hydrants, proposing locations for new installations or decommissioning redundant installations.
An element of inspecting and testing fire hydrants and undertaking basic maintenance and repair is essential to this role as this ensures that water supplies are immediately available for use in case of fire.
The successful candidate will be involved in assisting the management and implementation of auditing the Brigade's hydrants, ensuring that their location and condition are accurately recorded. Informed judgements will need to be made to assess the viability, condition, spacing and location of existing fire hydrants.
Accurate data input of the Hydrants location and condition on our database is imperative to ensure maximum practical benefit to our operational firefighting crews.
As well as inspecting and testing all new hydrants, the successful candidate will need to make informed decisions on behalf of AF&RS on all matters in relation to the provision of water supplies, whether this be via water undertakers, private or natural supplies, and to identify any potential problems in order to maintain an adequate provision of water for firefighting purposes.
The ideal candidate will hold a current driving licence, have technicalknowledge of a variety of mechanical and electrical equipment and previous experience in the practical use and maintenance of hydrant installations. An awareness of the hazards and associated control measures of working alone on the highway is essential for this role.
