Avon Fire & Rescue Service join their local community in celebrating Bristol Pride
Over the weekend, Avon Fire and Rescue Service (AF&RS) joined thousands of revellers to celebrate one of Bristol’s most anticipated events – Bristol Pride. Taking place on Saturday, 13 July, the Service celebrated with all those from the local area and beyond during the vibrant march which began its journey at Castle Park, moving through the streets of the city before reaching Millennium Square.
During the march, the crowds were treated to an energetic and lively procession filled with local groups, colourful costumes, and sequins. Watch Manager Anthony Dineen hit the decks and Digital Project Manager Sean Perry showcased his dance moves throughout the lively procession, alongside staff from across the Service who marched alongside the Pride wrapped fire engine in solidarity of the LGBTQ+ community.
On the morning of Bristol Pride, Temple Fire Station hosted a health and wellbeing breakfast, which offered attendees the opportunity to fuel up and get ready for the day ahead. Attendees, which included the Bristol Lord Mayor Councillor Andrew Varney, enjoyed a healthy breakfast from Bristol based Cake by Kym, smoothies from Novel Events’ bike-powered juice bar as well as glitter, face paint and plenty of fun. We were joined by the South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT), Bristol City Robins Foundation, Bristol Mind and the LGBTQ+ network of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).
Alongside SWASFT, AF&RS staff were on hand to answer any questions on working for the emergency services or help with personal safety concerns. The event also provided an opportunity to promote the work the Service do in the community and making people aware that being a firefighter is more than just fighting fires.
Richard Stokes, Culture and Inclusion Manager, said: “As a Service, we join thousands locally in marking the Pride movement every year. In commemoration of its roots in the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, the movement is a positive stance against discrimination, and we think it’s paramount that we stand alongside the LGBTQ+ community and showcase our support and commitment to inclusivity.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us at breakfast event on Saturday morning. It was fantastic to see such a diverse crowd there; we welcomed so many people from our community who got involved in all we had to offer, chatted to our staff, and joined us in getting excited for the celebrations ahead.
“I’d also like to thank all my colleagues at AF&RS and partnering agencies who made this year’s event bigger and better than ever. Without their hard work, efforts, and enthusiasm, it wouldn’t be the success it was.”
