Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AFRS) is urging residents to celebrate New Year’s Eve safely by following essential firework safety advice. Every year, accidents caused by fireworks result in injuries and damage to property, but with simple precautions, you can enjoy a safe and memorable start to 2025.
Firework Safety Advice
If you’re planning a home display this New Year’s Eve, keep these important tips in mind:
Buy fireworks from licensed sellers and check they carry the CE or UKCA safety mark.
Store fireworks securely in a closed box and remove them only when ready to use.
Follow instructions carefully and light fireworks one at a time, at arm’s length.
Never go back to a lit firework, even if it hasn’t gone off.
Supervise children closely, particularly with sparklers, which can reach temperatures of 2,000°C.
Consider Your Community and Pets
Fireworks can be distressing for some people and animals, so:
Inform your neighboursif you plan to set off fireworks.
Use low-noise fireworks where possible.
Keep pets indoors to protect them from loud noises.
Prevent Accidents and Fires
Avoid alcohol when handling fireworks.
Go to a professional firework display rather than hosting your own.
Light fireworks in open spaces, away from buildings, vehicles, and flammable materials.
Dispose of used fireworks safely by soaking them in water for 48hrs before disposing them.
