Smoke alarm alerts couple to fire

Northumbria Drive, Henleaze, Bristol

A couple in their 50s had a lucky escape after they were alerted to a fire in their home by their smoke alarm.

The couple had been asleep when the alarm activated and when firefighters arrived at the premises they were already outside and unhurt.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and found a fire in the kitchen. They used one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire and a positive pressure ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke.

It’s thought the fire started accidentally after the couple had left the dishwasher on overnight and it caught fire.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people to ensure all electrical items which don’t need to be on continuously are switched off after use.

Fortunately in this case the smoke alarm activated giving the couple time to escape the premises.

The damaged caused by the fire was limited to the kitchen.
