Crews from Temple and Patchway fire stations were called to the cliff face near Blaise Castle after a dog had become stuck.
Larry, the 18-month-old black lab, was being walked by his owner off the leash when he climbed a short distance up the cliff face but was unable to come down or reach the top.
Although Larry was not far up, he was stuck for nearly two hours.
Firefighters were able to set up at the top of the cliff and descend to the dog.
Once with Larry, they secured him with the dog harness and lowered to the bottom.
The uninjured dog was then reunited with his owner.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash when walking near cliffs or large drops as animals can easily fall or become stuck.
