Person dies in flats fire

Mawdeley House, Catherine Mead Street, Bedminster, Bristol

A person has died in a fire in a block of flats in Bristol.

Fire crews were called to the premises after reports of the alarms activating and on arrival they found a well developed fire on the third floor of the building.

There were reports that a number of residents were still inside the premises.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus conducted a thorough search of the building, which is divided into flats. Sadly, they discovered one person had died.

A further 20 residents were evacuated and a number were rehoused by Bristol City Council. Five people received oxygen therapy for smoke inhalation from firefighters and paramedics on scene.

Firefighters tackled the fire using two high pressure hose reels and once the fire was extinguished crews remained on the scene overnight to ensure any hotspots from the fire were fully out.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to get underway later today.
