Consultation launched on plans for new Temple Fire Station

Artist's impressionAvon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) has opened a consultation on outline plans to rebuild Temple Fire Station in the centre of Bristol.

It follows the launch in January 2014 of the Service’s Investing for the Future programme that proposed the building of three new fire stations, a new Headquarters and the major expansion of an existing fire station.

Temple Fire Station currently shares a site with the Service’s Headquarters function in a building constructed in 1973.  With the cost of maintaining the site over the next 10 years estimated at £9 million, plans have been drawn up for a phased move of the Headquarters function and the build of a new fire station on a smaller footprint on the site.

In the long term the scheme will free up the majority of the current Temple Back site for redevelopment, providing capital for the Investing for the Future programme.

Today (Thursday) key stakeholders were shown initial plans for the new fire station. The facility would ensure the same operational capability and crewing levels as the existing fire station currently provides.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer Kevin Pearson said: “In simple terms it would not be cost effective to continue to invest money in the existing building. As a result Avon Fire Authority has taken the view that taxpayers’ money is better spent on providing a new fire station which would dramatically reduce our overheads in the future.

“We are absolutely committed to providing a fire station on the Temple Back site which will continue to provide the same level of cover as we currently have in place. This will ensure the centre of Bristol continues to receive an excellent emergency service and the existing high response standards.”

“The project will take place over a series of phases – the first of which will see the demolition of part of the existing fire station. This will pave the way for the building of a modern, cost efficient building to replace it.

“While the demolition and rebuild works take place we will continue to run a fully operational fire station and Headquarters function from Temple Back.

“In the coming years we have also proposed to move our Headquarters function to Keynsham. When we have new office accommodation in place and a new Temple Fire Station built we will then be in a position to either sell or lease the rest of the site at Temple Back for development.”

Details of the plans and comment forms are available in the Reception area of the Avon Fire & Rescue Service’s Headquarters at Temple Back, Bristol, BS1 6EU until Friday 1 August.
