Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is supporting a campaign to encourage people to check their smoke alarms when the clocks go forwards this weekend.
The hard-hitting national advertising campaign, launched last week, is urging householders – particularly parents - to test their alarms when they are resetting clocks on Sunday 31 March.
Station Manager Rob Edwards, AF&RS Community Safety, said: “When you’re changing clocks this weekend we’re asking that you take an extra few minutes to test your smoke alarms at the same time.
“Checking your alarms, or those belonging to someone who can’t test their own, is a quick and simple chore that could literally save a life one day.
“A smoke alarm will buy you and your loved ones vital seconds to get out of the house in the event of a fire, but it can only save your life if it is working.”
In the UK householders are more than four times as likely to die in a fire if smoke alarms aren’t working. The campaign encourages people to check their alarms as they make their way around the home altering clocks.
Rob added: “We know that smoke alarms are sometimes frustrating if they go off when you burn the toast, so it may be tempting to remove the batteries. If that’s a familiar story make today the day you replace them or fit a new alarm. A little inconvenience is a price worth paying if it means you escape from a fire.”
