Avon Fire and Rescue Service trials underwater ROV to advance water rescue operations.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service is trialing an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), loaned by Deep Trekker, to assess its potential capabilities in improving search and rescue operations under water.

The equipment is being trialed at Temple Fire Station in Bristol, chosen for its close proximity to Bristol Docks, busy with surrounding bars and restaurants.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service already has strong resources for rescuing people from the surface of the water and during floods, but speed is crucial when it comes to rescuing people from under the water.

The REVOLUTION ROV is fitted with advanced sonar technology, enabling it to pinpoint individuals in reduced visibility. Once an individual is located, the ROV’s mechanical arm secures the person, facilitating a prompt rise to the surface for immediate lifesaving interventions.

Firefighter David Hodges who has been leading on this project said: “This new ROV has the potential to be life-changing for water rescue operations. By allowing us to work faster and more effectively, we aim to improve public safety. Implementing equipment like this could be groundbreaking for rescue technology.”

This trial aims to see if the product could increase the speed and safety of water rescues. Glynn Chisholm of Deep Trekker has been key in tailoring this trial technology to meet the rescue service’s specific requirements.

Glynn Chisholm of Deep Trekker comments: “Our current trial with Avon Fire and Rescue Service is an important test of how specialized technology can support critical emergency operations. We’re dedicated to adapting our ROV technology to meet their specific needs during this evaluation phase, exploring its potential to contribute to rescue operations.”

Firefighters are currently training to use the ROV. Training includes mastering the ROV’s sonar functions, developing effective search patterns, and ensuring safe retrieval practices. This is currently still in a trial phase and the Service has not purchased the ROV.
