Avon Fire & Rescue Service highlights free hard- of- hearing smoke alarms during Deaf Awareness Week

On Deaf Awareness Week (5 – 11 May), Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is raising awareness about the support and resources available to those who are deaf or hard of hearing—most importantly, the provision of specialist smoke alarms through free Home Fire Safety Visits.

AF&RS continually offers hard-of-hearing smoke alarms as part of its commitment to protecting every member of the community. These alarms are designed with strobe lighting and vibrating pads, ensuring individuals who cannot hear standard alarms are still alerted in the event of a fire—especially when asleep or alone.

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home. Our hard-of-hearing alarms are a vital piece of life-saving equipment, and we’re proud to offer them free of charge as part of our Home Fire Safety Visits. Deaf Awareness Week gives us a chance to highlight these services and reach more people who may benefit from them.”

Nikki Rice, Prevention Manager

When completing the free home fire safety check, you will be assessed to determine if you need a home fire safety visit. If you are hard of hearing, you could expect the following, which will be determined based on your needs:

  • Specialist deaf alarms can be installed where needed.
  • A British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter can be arranged to support Home Fire Safety Visits.
  • Advice is given on fire safety and escape planning tailored to the individual’s needs.

If you or someone you know is deaf or hard of hearing, AF&RS encourages you to get in touch to take the home fire safety check and learn more about the equipment available.

Let’s work together to ensure everyone, regardless of hearing ability, has access to fire safety support and protection.
