As Bonfire Night (5 November) approaches, Avon Fire & Rescue Service is reminding everyone to prioritise safety. The excitement of the festivities can often lead us to forget the dangers that fireworks and bonfires pose to ourselves and our homes.
Whether you’re attending a public bonfire or professional firework display, following a simple guideline will reduce the risk serious harm for yourself and others.
Nikki Rice, Prevention Manager said: “Bonfire Night can be a wonderful tradition enjoyed by people of all ages, but safety must always come first. Over the years we have seen avoidable accidents that could have been prevented by following basic fire safety advice.”
Bonfire safety tips:
Keep bonfires away from buildings, trees, and anything flammable. Ensure enough space for people to gather safely.
Always watch over children and pets. Make sure everyone stays at a safe distance from the fire.
Burn only dry wood or suitable materials; never burn rubbish as it can release harmful fumes.
Have water, or a garden hose on hand in case the fire spreads.
Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving. You can douse the ashes with water to prevent reignition.
Fireworks safety tips:
Attend an event hosted by reputable organisers, who prioritise safety.
Only purchase fireworks from licensed retailers, ensuring they meet the British safety standards.
Carefully read the firework instructions. Each type has its own safety guidelines.
Spectators should stand at least 25 meters away from lit fireworks. Keep pets indoors to protect them from the loud noise or injury.
Never light more than one firework at once, and never return to a firework after it’s been lit.
By following our guidelines, you can help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable night.
In the event of a fire or emergency, call 999 immediately. Never attempt to tackle a fire yourself.
