Meet the team: Sally the Labrador
On National Pet Day (11 April), we’re celebrating Sally, one of our urban search and rescue (USAR) dogs.
In an emergency always call 999
Sally is a seven-year-old black Labrador who, with handler Firefighter Rachel King, provides highly specialised search capabilities to the Service and wider USAR function.
Working out of Hicks Gate fire station, Rachel and Sally can be sent to any location where specialist search is required. This can include collapsed and unsafe buildings and confined spaces as well as wide open spaces such as fields, riverbanks, and roadways.
Sally is trained to locate live casualties, barking to alert Rachel and other crews of their presence.
When she’s not working, Sally loves to collect tennis balls. She also enjoys a pig’s ear for a well-deserved treat.
