Stay safe when you’re trick-or-treating

As Halloween approaches, Avon Fire & Rescue Service is urging families to prioritise road safety ahead of the annual spooky season. With children excitedly preparing their costumes and planning their trick-or-treating routes, we’re reminding parents to think about the real road nightmares and teach their children the rules of the road.

Prevention Manager Meghann Elvin said: “Halloween is such an exciting time for children, but it also brings its own share of risks on the roads. It’s important everyone remembers to stay visible and vigilant, and still a spooktacular Halloween.

“Road safety is a community effort. Everyone including pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers play a role in keeping our roads safe.”

We can help ensure a fun and accident-free Halloween for everyone, by following these simple safety tips:

Be seen and stay safe

  • Wear reflective clothing or accessories to enhance visibility when walking in the dark.
  • Add reflective tape or glow sticks to dark costumes to ensure other road users can see you.
  • Always be mindful of your surroundings while walking near roads.

Road awareness for young people

  • Teach children to look both ways before crossing the street and to use designated crossings whenever possible.
  • Remind children to stay focused and avoid distractions like mobile phones while walking or crossing the road.
  • Keep conversations light and fun but stress the importance of paying attention.
  • If there are no designated crossings, make sure children know to cross where they can be easily seen by drivers – don’t cross between parked cars or next to large vehicles.

Drivers: Slow down and stay alert

  • Drive slowly in residential areas, particularly where children may be trick-or-treating.
  • Watch for children who might cross the street unexpectedly, especially in the excitement of the night.
  • Avoid distractions while driving and stay alert for pedestrians.
