Langport Road, Weston-super-Mare
A 21 year-old woman had a lucky escape after she left her laptop computer switched on, on her bed and it caught fire.
To raise the alarm the woman shouted out and was heard by a former firefighter from AF&RS who happened to be walking by at the time.
He then assisted the woman to safety, closed the door to the bedroom to prevent the fire from spreading and alerted a couple with a one year-old baby who lived in the flat upstairs to the fire.
Fortunately everyone escaped the property without injury, however a cat sadly died as a result of smoke inhalation.
Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the ground floor flat and tackled the fire using a high pressure hose reel. The bedroom was left badly damaged by the fire.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind people never to leave electrical equipment switched on when not in use and never to leave laptop computers on a bed as this can block the cooling fan and it could catch fire.
