Emollient creams are often used for conditions such as:
- Eczema
- Bed sores
- Psoriasis
- Ulcers
They can be prescribed or purchased over the counter as gels, sprays, creams, ointments and lotions. These products are designed to help create a barrier over the skin and reduce water loss.
What are the risks?
Emollient creams are an effective skin treatment, but they do present a fire risk. Residue from these products on bedding and clothing greatly increases their flammability, even from just one use.
Staying safe
Whether you’re caring for someone who uses emollients or you use them yourself, being mindful of their fire risk can help keep you safe. You should remember:
- Avoid smoking whilst using emollient creams. Even if they are not on your skin, their residue on your clothing or soft furnishings is extremely flammable.
- Keep well away from candles.
- Sit at least one metre away from a heater as sitting too close can set your clothing or chair alight.
